Advanced Grading Options on Canvas

What is It?

Instructors can apply advanced grading methods to their courses. This allows for the customization of grades according to personal preference.

Signing into Canvas

Step 1:

In your web browser, navigate to Canvas using the following link:

https://mtech.instructure.com

Note: Links to help with passwords are on the Web Sign-on page. If you cannot log into Canvas, contact the IT Help Center.


Step 2:

Enter your username and password, then select "SIGN IN."

Set a Grading Method for a Category

Step 1:

In your web browser, navigate to your Canvas homepage using the following link:

https://mtech.instructure.com

Note: If you are having any issues accessing Canvas, please navigate to the Login section.


Step 2:

Navigate to the Grades tab from Courses and select the settings gear at the top right of the page.

Step 3:

There are 3 categories of settings to edit:

  • Late Policies category to apply settings like the ones highlighted below.
  • Grade Posting Policy category where you may decide your preference on grading.
  • View Options such as arrangements, color personalization, and organizational preferences.

Custom Grade Formulas

Step 1:

In your web browser, navigate to your Canvas homepage using the following link:

https://mtech.instructure.com


Step 2:

Open Grades from the Courses tab, select settings, and locate the Advanced section.

Step 3:

Enter the override grade if necessary.

Extra Credit

Step 1:

In your web browser, navigate to your Canvas homepage using the following link:

https://mtech.instructure.com


Step 2:

Create a +New Assignment by locating the Courses tab. Use 0 Point Value.

Step 3:

Add extra points to an existing assignment by manually entering extra points in the Gradebook.

Using a Rubric - Defining New Grading Form from Scratch

Step 1:

In your web browser, navigate to your Canvas homepage using the following link:

Step 2:

Locate the Admin navigation tab and select Rubrics. Click + Rubric in the upper right corner of the page.

Using a Rubric - Create New Grading Form from a Template

Step 1:

In your web browser, navigate to your Canvas homepage using the following link:

Step 2:

Locate Assignments from the Course navigation and select Speed Grader for the assignment you want to create a new grading form for.

Glossary

Aggregation

Aggregation - Determines how grades in a category are combined. There are 9 different aggregation methods:

  1. Mean of grades
  2. Weighted mean of grades
  3. Simple Weighted mean of grades
  4. Mean of grades (with extra credits)
  5. Median of grades
  6. Lowest grade
  7. Highest grade
  8. Mode of grades
  9. Natural
